چکیده

This paper reports the design and fabrication of a micromachined silicon pin that serves as a novel contact-printing tool. More specific application is in the DNA and protein microarray field for small and precise droplet printing onto a solid support. Our goal is to develop low cost, high performance silicon pins as simple replacement of the stainless-steel pins used in typical microarray robots. The test results show an average droplet size of 38 μm in diameter, compared with over 100 μm for the commercial pins, as well as more consistent droplet sizes.

Silicon Microarray Pin with Selective Hydrophobic Coating

We have recently demonstrated the viability of silicon microarray pins, taking advantage of lithographic and batch processing of silicon micromachining in comparison with conventional and serial processing currently used for commercial pins. The reduced spot size (< 50% in diameter, i.e., > 4X in array density), however, made such undesirable needs as preprinting more pronounced. Preprinting, a...

Self-assembled screen-printed microwave inductors

Introduction: With traditional radio frequency (RF) circuits, planar inductors lie on their host substrate and, as a result, suffer from the unwanted effects of low unloaded Q-factors and low first self-resonant frequencies. The former restricts the use of these inductors to poor selectivity and lossy applications, while the latter presents a limitation on the useful bandwidth of operation. Thi...

Micromachined fluid ejector arrays for biotechnological and biomedical applications

In this paper, we present a micromachined flextensional droplet ejector array for use to eject liquids. By placing a fluid behind one face of a vibrating circular plate that has an orifice at its center, we achieve contiuuous and drop-ondemand ejection of the fluid. We present results of ejection of water and isopropanol. The ejector is harmless to sensitive fluids and can he used to eject fuel...

Evaporation of picoliter droplets on surfaces with a range of wettabilities and thermal conductivities.

The evaporation of picoliter water and ethanol droplets generated by drop-on-demand inkjet printing was investigated on substrates with apparent contact angles between 10^{∘} and 135^{∘} and thermal conductivities between 0.25 and 149 Wm^{-1}K^{-1}. Drying times were calculated from a diffusion-limited model for droplets with both pinned and moving contact lines as a function of droplet diamete...

Maskless Lithography Using Drop-On-Demand Inkjet Printing Method

Writing process patterns directly on a substrate with small liquid droplets generated by Drop-On-Demand (DOD) inkjet devices offers a low cost, non-contact, low temperature, flexible, and data driven patterning approach. Existing inkjet printheads have a limited number of inkjet devices, which generate droplets on the scale of tens of microns. In our research, we have developed a monolithic ink...
